Extract a thumbnail from your videos

Save the first frame of any video as an image, ready to use as a cover, poster or preview.

MP4, WebM, MOV, and MKV, as many as you like. Your computer does the work, so long videos take a while.

Every video needs a still image: a poster for the video player on your website, a cover in a gallery, a preview in a presentation or a thumbnail for a social post. This tool takes the first frame of each video you add and saves it as an image at the full resolution of the video. Drop one video or a whole batch.

How to extract a thumbnail from a video

  1. Drop your videos in the box above, or click to pick them. You can add as many as you like, in any format your browser can play.
  2. JPG is selected by default. Switch on PNG, WebP or AVIF instead, or as well.
  3. Optional: open Advanced Settings to resize the thumbnail by percentage, width or height, and add more sizes.
  4. Click Extract Thumbnails, then download each image or all of them at once. Nothing is uploaded: everything runs in your browser.

Which image format should I choose?

JPG opens everywhere and is the safe default. WebP is lighter and perfect for a website poster. AVIF is lighter still, for pages with many videos. PNG is lossless, so pick it when you want to edit the frame, for example to add a title and make a cover.

Frequently asked questions

Which frame do I get?

Always the very first frame of the video. If your video starts with a black or blank frame, the thumbnail will be black too, so trim the start of the video first.

Which videos can I use?

MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV and any other video your browser can decode. HEVC videos, such as many iPhone recordings, need a browser and device that can decode HEVC.

Are my videos uploaded?

No. The first frame is decoded and saved as an image in your browser, on your device. Your videos are never sent to a server, so this works for private files too.
