Extract an AVIF thumbnail from WebM

Get the first frame of your WebM videos as an AVIF image, as small as it gets.

Drop your videos here

MP4, WebM, MOV, and MKV, as many as you like. Your computer does the work, so long videos take a while.

WebM is the open video format of the web, used by browser recordings, video sites and many web apps. AVIF is the newest widely supported image format and gives the smallest files. This tool takes the first frame of each WebM video and saves it as an AVIF, without uploading anything.

How to extract an AVIF thumbnail from WebM

  1. Drop your WebM videos in the box above, or click to pick them. You can add as many as you like.
  2. AVIF is already selected as the output format. Switch on other formats if you want them too.
  3. Optional: open Advanced Settings to resize the thumbnail by percentage, width or height, and add more sizes.
  4. Click Extract Thumbnails, then download each image or all of them at once. Nothing is uploaded: everything runs in your browser.

Why save WebM thumbnails as AVIF?

If you publish WebM videos on your site, a poster image from the first frame makes the page look complete before the video loads, instead of showing an empty box. AVIF is ideal when every kilobyte counts, such as a page with many video previews. Encoding takes a little longer than JPG or WebP.

Frequently asked questions

Which WebM videos are supported?

WebM files with VP8, VP9 or AV1 video, which modern browsers decode. Screen recordings made in the browser are usually VP8 or VP9.

Do all browsers display AVIF?

All current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display AVIF. For older browsers, also export a JPG.

Are my videos uploaded?

No. The first frame is decoded and saved as an image in your browser, on your device. Your videos are never sent to a server, so this works for private files too.
