Most MP4 files use H.264. Re-encoding them with HEVC (H.265) keeps the MP4 container but uses a much more efficient codec, often producing files around half the size at similar quality. Handy for archiving and for sharing on Apple devices.
How to convert MP4 to HEVC (H.265)
- Drop your MP4 files in the box above, or click to pick them. You can add as many as you like.
- HEVC (H.265) is already selected as the output format. Switch on other formats if you want them too.
- Optional: open Advanced Settings to resize by percentage, width or height, and add more sizes.
- Click Start Conversion, then download each file or all of them at once. Nothing is uploaded: the conversion runs in your browser.
Why convert MP4 to HEVC (H.265)?
HEVC saves storage and bandwidth. Encoding needs HEVC support in your browser and hardware, available in Safari and in Chrome or Edge on many recent devices. Very low-bitrate MP4s may not shrink much, since there is little left to save.
Frequently asked questions
Will every device play the HEVC file?
Apple devices and most recent phones, TVs and computers play HEVC. Some older devices and Firefox do not, so keep the H.264 version if compatibility matters.
Why does the conversion fail?
Your browser could not find an HEVC encoder on this device. Try Safari, or Chrome or Edge on a more recent computer.
Are my videos uploaded?
No. The video is decoded and encoded in your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, which also means there is no file size limit other than your device memory.
