Convert GIF to WebP

Replace GIF images with lighter WebP files that keep their transparency.

JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, and AVIF, as many as you like. Your computer does the work, so a big batch takes a moment.

GIF images are often much heavier than they need to be. WebP stores the same picture in a fraction of the size, supports full color and keeps transparency. Convert your GIF files here and use the WebP versions on your website.

How to convert GIF to WebP

  1. Drop your GIF files in the box above, or click to pick them. You can add as many as you like.
  2. WebP is already selected as the output format. Switch on other formats if you want them too.
  3. Optional: open Advanced Settings to resize by percentage, width or height, and add more sizes.
  4. Click Start Conversion, then download each file or all of them at once. Nothing is uploaded: the conversion runs in your browser.

Why convert GIF to WebP?

Lighter images make pages faster. WebP keeps transparent backgrounds, so it is a direct replacement for GIF logos, icons and illustrations. Note that animated GIFs are converted to a still image of their first frame.

Frequently asked questions

Does the WebP stay animated?

No. The converter keeps the first frame of an animated GIF as a still WebP image.

Is transparency preserved?

Yes. Transparent areas of the GIF remain transparent in the WebP file.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, on your device. Your images are never uploaded to a server, so this works for private and confidential files too.
